From
1914 to 1918 the 'Westhoek', the western part the Province of
West-Flanders, i.e. the area of Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide, Ieper (Ypres),
Poperinge, was the scene of the Great War. Hundreds of thousands of
soldiers of more than 20 nationalities fell in this conflict. After
the often pointless battles and vast destruction, the Westhoek rose
from its ashes. Today the Westhoek wants to spread a message of
peace all over the world, with the In Flanders Fields Museum in
Ypres, the IJzertoren in Diksmuide, the numerous military cemeteries,
the war memorials and sites.
By choosing for Diksmuide your trip is already a success. Relax
while you can in your lazy chair and glance quietly through this
leaflet. You'll notice at once that Diksmuide on the river IJzer in
the middle of the Flemish West Corner is a destination of sheer
surprise.
The coast has always exerted a strong attraction on artists.
Consequently, quite a number of avant-garde artists originated from
the Flemish Coast or stayed there at a certain point in time. The
exhibition at the PMMK, the Museum of Modern Art by the Sea in
Ostend -the city of Ensor- wants to highlight this aspect in
particular.
Upon visiting Bruges, you will immediately notice that this city has
always carefully cherished its architectural and artistic treasures
